OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir On the sidelines of the 66th Session of the UNGA New York, USA, 21 September 2011

The OIC Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir met on the sidelines of the 66th UNGA held in New York, USA on 21 September 2011. The meeting was chaired by the OIC Secretary General, Prof. Dr. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, and attended by Foreign Minister Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Foreign Minister of Turkey Mr. Ahmet Davutoglu and representatives of Saudi Arabia and Niger.

Mir Waiz Umar Farooq represented the True Representatives of the Kashmiri People.

The OIC Secretary General reaffirmed OIC's continued commitment and support to the Kashmiri peoples right to self-determination. He expressed satisfaction on the resumption of dialogue between Pakistan and India, which he hoped would help in achieving a just and peaceful resolution of the long standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute. The Foreign Minister of Turkey, and representatives of Saudi Arabia and Niger also reiterated their support for Kashmiri peoples right to self-determination.

Foreign Minister, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar reiterated commitment of the Government of Pakistan to remain constructively engaged with India for a meaningful and result-oriented dialogue and for a peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. She supported association of the True Representatives of the Kashmiri People with Pakistan-India dialogue process to find a lasting solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. She emphasized that a durable settlement of the Kashmir dispute must be acceptable to all parties - Pakistan, India and most importantly the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

In his statement, Mir Waiz Umer Farooq, Chairman APHC, representing the True Representatives of the Kashmiri People, updated the meeting of the latest situation in the Indian occupied Kashmir and called for regular monitoring of human rights situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir by the international organizations especially OIC. Referring to the human rights violations of Kashmiris and discovery of mass graves by the IOK’s State Human Rights Commission, Mir Waiz demanded investigation of human rights violations by the UN in the occupied State and urged the Special Rapporteur for Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances to conduct an independent inquiry on the fate of thousands of missing people and existence of mass graves in IOK.

The True Representative of the Kashmiri people also presented a Memorandum to the Secretary General containing proposals for a peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir dispute.
