INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATED

NEW YORK, Aug 14, 2009: At a simple ceremony, the national flag was hoisted at the Pakistan House here today to mark the 62nd anniversary of the country's establishment as an independent, sovereign nation.

As the national anthem was played, Pakistan ’s UN Ambassador Abdullah Hussain Haroon raised the national flag in the presence of officers and staff of the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate General of Pakistan New York

The proceedings began with recitation from the Holy Quran.

Messages of President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani were read on the occasion by the Consul General, Mohsin Razi.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Ambassador Haroon called for efforts to protect the aims, objectives and values for which the Muslims of India launched a movement for a separate homeland under the inspiring leadership of Quaid –e – Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Denouncing those those who term Pakistan a “Failed State”, he said Pakistan has a democratically elected government, an independent judiciary, free media, a sovereign parliament and meets all its financial obligations

Ambassador Haroon said that the people of Pakistan should serve the country with dedication and devotion and work selflessly to uphold the values, principles of the Father of the Nation.
